Love what you do

/ / I’m packing up my life after one year in Berlin right now, leaving for Bali on Monday. It might be a tiny bit quieter here for a couple weeks while I try to have a little holiday, catch up with the fish and set up camp. / /

Do you love what you do?

And by ‘Do’ I mean your job or whatever means you pursue to make a living.

The test is real simple. You only have to ask yourself one question.

So here we go, this is the question:

Would you do your job even if you weren’t paid for it?

If the answer to that question is yes, congratulations, you rock. You know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Cool shit.

If your answer however is, no, then get the fuck out of what you’re doing. Make immediate escape plans for as soon as possible.

There is no way in hell you would want to lie to yourself on this one. Now that would just be silly, wouldn’t it.

The matter of the fact is this:

If you genuinely love and enjoy what you do to make a living, then you’d do it for free. Or you would take on another job to support yourself so that you could keep on doing what you love.

How many corporate lawyers or teachers or bank employees or customer service employees or accountants or (insert here) do you know, who would do their current job for free, in their spare time, and take day jobs as waiters to support themselves?

You see, I love writing. Anything really. Wait, no. Anything I want to write. I don’t really like writing for other people or about things.

I maintain a blog that uses up a lot of my attention, but doesn’t give me any pay checks (yet). Often times, I write till late at night on millions of other stuff and journal entries and possible contributions to publications. So I write because I love it and I do it for free. To make a living, I do a few other things. That is, until I can make a living as a writer. Got it?

Do you love what you do?

I think you know what to do.
