How to Live Your Life Like a Great Story

What's your story?

What makes you, you?

Life should be lived like a great story, people. You know, the one that you, yourself, would enjoy reading about, telling your friends and the world about. One that gives you goosebumps.

What makes an exciting story? What makes a story a story worth telling?

Great stories often include dramas, highs and lows, tears and sweat. (Let's not deny that)

Great stories don’t include repetition. They don’t repeat the same thing within them and they don’t repeat other stories.

Imagine a story where the same thing happens over and over again. You’d probably stop reading. Boring.

Great stories are different from what’s out there. They are unique, colorful and incredible. They 'Wow' you.

When I overcome my fears or try new things, I enrich my life by making it a story to tell.

Every time I’ve…

  • packed my bags, said goodbye to loved ones and jumped on another plane to move to a new place or travel the world,
  • tried something new (like starting this blog)
  • followed my dreams (like becoming a scuba dive instructor)
  • made an important decision (to never ever take up grown-up employment / soul-sucking jobs again in my life)

…I walked into the unknown. And I continue to do so.

Scary? You bet 'cha.

But I, myself, have been writing my story. I am putting myself in control of what story I am going to tell my grandchildren later.

It’s been worth it. Over and over and over again.

No regrets. But a lot of stories to tell.

No idea how to live your life like a great story?

  • Go out there and experiment.
  • Make crazy decisions.
  • Take risks.
  • Do something you have never done before.
  • Start a business around your passions.
  • Walk across your country (or just across our own boundaries).
  • Do the unconventional, the unexpected, the abnormal, the unrealistic.
  • Run a marathon.
  • Step out of the closet.
  • Do something silly.
  • Shoot that documentary.

Just DO something. Step up for who you are and what you believe in. That alone will put you in the director’s seat of YOUR OWN UNIQUE STORY. It’s happening in realtime, it’s live, it’s now. Go live it.

Love it, Conni! So true. I'm thinking about my story right now, and I think it's about to change… it's time to step out into the unknown!

    :)

    • Conni says:

Thanks a lot, Therese! That’s the cool thing.. we can change our stories as we go. Nothing has to stay the way it is if we don’t want it to. Good luck with changing direction, I’m curious how and where you’ll go!

I read somewhere, can't remember where — but they said to "live your life like someone is going to write a biography on you at the end."
Obviously, you wouldn't want a biography about you to be boring. So in order to make it exciting, you need to do the things that you truly want to, and of course take risks.
Just thought that quote tied into this post perfectly! Great post Conni. :-D

    • Conni says:

Great quote, thanks for sharing, Alex! Just think of all the boring hypothetical biographies out there… (No risk in boring, ey!)

  3. Benny says:

I've found when I get out of my comfort zone, I've come out with some great stories to tell. Without doing anything new to us, life can get pretty boring. Great post Conni!

    • Conni says:

Absolutely, Benny! Getting a bit uncomfortable is part of the deal.. The unknown isn’t comfortable, but it’s exciting and can be so rewarding!

  4. Jacky says:

I'm totally inspired by your life! You are the person I would have been, if I wouldn't have held myself back. I've never been conventional yet somehow ended living that way. But I'm working on it, trying to get out of the rat race and live my life on my own terms. I know It will happen.
You have created an awesome blog and I can't wait to read more.
    Jacky

    • Conni says:

Wow, thanks so much, Jacky. Your words mean a lot.

I know this sounds conventional (!), but it is NEVER too late. Some people think they have to live the rest of their conventional lives conventionally, that they don’t have it in them, or that it’s too late. Screw that. It makes me happy to see that you’re working on living the life you want and that you know that it’s on the way. Congrats, you’re a brave and special soul! All the best, I believe in you!!! (Let me know how you go if you want via email!)

    Hey Conni,

I absolutely loved the title of this post, and I loved the content too!

“Live your life like a great story”…that is going to stick with me for a while. It’s the kind of thing that you should wake up with – “what am I going to do today that is worthy of a few words in the book of my life?”
